MANILA, Philippines — Today marks the third day of the confirmation of charges hearing in the crimes against humanity case against former President Rodrigo Duterte before the International Criminal Court.
Prosecutors have laid out their arguments seeking to establish substantial grounds to believe Duterte is responsible for thousands of killings linked to his anti-drug campaign.
Duterte will not attend the remaining sessions after the chamber granted his request to be excused from appearing.
The hearing is meant to determine whether there is sufficient evidence to move the case to trial. It is not a determination of guilt or innocence. Judges have up to 60 days after the conclusion of the hearing to issue their ruling.
ICC prosecutors have charged Duterte with three counts of crimes against humanity, alleging his involvement in at least 76 murders committed between 2013 and 2018.
