MANILA, Philippines — Naval and air units from the Philippines and the United States successfully conducted the third bilateral maritime cooperative activity (MCA) in the waters of Bajo de Masinloc (Scarborough Shoal) from May 26 to 30, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) said Sunday.

Participating naval and air units came from the AFP, Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), and the US Indo-Pacific Command (USINDOPACOM).

Naval and air units from the AFP consisted of the guided-missile frigate, BRP Antonio Luna (FFG-15), a naval AW-109 helicopter, FA-50 light fighter jets, and a W-3A “Sokol” helicopter.

Meanwhile, the PCG deployed the multi-role response vessel BRP Melchora Aquino (MRRV-9702), with the USINDOPACOM participating with the Legend-class cutter, the USCGC Midgett (WMSL-757), and an MH-65 helicopter.

“During the five-day activity, allied forces conducted a series of maritime exercises, including search and rescue, visit, board, search and seizure, maritime law enforcement training, rotary wing deck landing qualifications, vertical replenishment, and communication exercises,” the AFP said.

The first MCA was held in January and the second in March.

“The successful conduct of the recent MCA reflects the enduring commitment of the Philippines and the United States to deepen defense cooperation, strengthen maritime domain awareness, and uphold a rules-based international order,” it added.
