MANILA, Philippines – A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck off the coast of Maasim, Sarangani, on Monday morning, triggering tsunami warnings, damaging infrastructure, disrupting power, communication and transportation services, and leaving casualties across several parts of Mindanao.
Authorities continue to assess the extent of the damage as aftershocks persist and emergency response efforts remain underway.
The Office of Civil Defense, local governments, and national agencies are conducting damage assessments and relief operations following the massive quake that struck at 7:37 a.m.
Classes in affected areas have remained suspended.
Authorities believed that death toll may continue to rise as operations are on going. As of Tuesday noon,, at least 41 people have been reported dead and over 450 others injured, according to disaster officials.
The quake’s epicenter was located off Maasim, Sarangani, and was felt across much of Mindanao.
Tsunami were reported in six areas; highest recorded wave reached 1.4 meters above normal tide levels. The alert was lifted Monday afternoon.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) warned that aftershocks could be felt for more than a month, prompting authorities to advise residents to remain alert and avoid damaged structures.
So far, Phivolcs has recorded more than 130 aftershocks, several of which were felt, including one measuring magnitude 6.7.
