House exec says Sara Duterte’s silence on West Philippine Sea worrisome

MANILA, Philippines — Vice President Sara Duterte’s silence on issues discussed by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. during his third State of the Nation Address (Sona) related to the West Philippine Sea and Philippine Offshore Gaming Operations (Pogo) ban in the country was “concerning” and “worrisome,” according to a lawmaker.

In a statement released Thursday, House Majority Leader Manuel Jose Dalipe pointed out the importance of supporting the chief executive’s stance on the said issues and unity.

“We should all be on the same boat in supporting the President, especially in relation to the West Philippine Sea issue and the controversies surrounding the Pogo operations in the country,” Dalipe said

“President Marcos made brave and bold pronouncements during his Sona that were met with widespread approval and applause from the nation. Yet, the Vice-President’s utter silence on these crucial issues raises questions about her loyalty to the country,” he added.

He likewise said that Duterte’s silence “not only undermines the collective efforts of our government but also casts doubt on her commitment to the nation’s best interests.”

In line with this, he called on Duterte to publicly show her support for Marcos and help him address the issues mentioned.

“In these challenging times, it is imperative that we stand together and support the President’s policies that aim to safeguard our sovereignty and ensure the welfare of our people. The Vice-President’s support is crucial in reinforcing our national unity and determination to address these pressing concerns,” Dalipe concluded.

During his Sona, Marcos announced the all-out ban of Pogo, as he directed the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation to wind down and cease its operations by the end of the year.

Last July 11, Duterte announced her then-plans to snub Marcos’ Sona and named herself the “designated survivor.”

In June, Duterte stepped down as Education secretary and vice chair of the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict. Her resignation took effect on July 19, and then-Senator Sonny Angara replaced her.
