MANILA, Philippines — As the 39th anniversary of the Edsa People Power Revolution draws near, Akbayan party-list first nominee Chel Diokno on Sunday urged voters to honor the spirit of the historic uprising by choosing the right candidates in the May 2025 elections.
He said voters should uphold the democratic values championed during the revolution by participating in the electoral process with discernment and integrity.
“The Edsa People Power 1 restored our trust in the electoral system and regained our right to choose our preferred candidates without fear,” Diokno said in Filipino.

“Let us not waste this right. Let us use it to vote wisely and choose deserving officials who can do much for Filipinos and our country,” he added.
The human rights lawyer also advised voters to critically assess the candidates’ track records and achievements rather than being swayed by campaign promises.
“Everyone will promise you the moon and the sun and the stars. We cannot base our choice of candidates solely on what they say,” Diokno said in a mix of English and Filipino.
“We also need to look at their track record. If they have been in government, what have they accomplished as a public servant? If from the private sector, what have they done for the community?” he asked.

He also highlighted the importance of electing “transformational or servant leaders” who prioritize the country’s interests over personal gains.
“Someone who truly serves, not expecting to be served. A leader who prioritizes advancing the interests and welfare of all. That is the transformational leader we should all look for,” he added.
Diokno noted that 63 percent of voters in the upcoming elections are young people, including millennials and Gen Zs, underscoring their significant influence in shaping the country’s leadership.

The human rights lawyer’s message came as the country prepares to commemorate the revolution that ended then-President Ferdinand Marcos Sr.’s dictatorship in 1986.
The 39th anniversary of EDSA People Power is on February 25.
