MANILA, Philippines – Former Interior secretary and senatorial candidate Benhur Abalos Jr. is calling for a dedicated socialized housing program for Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), saying they should have the opportunity to own homes after years of working abroad and supporting the economy.
Abalos visited Singapore over the weekend as part of his senatorial campaign, meeting with Filipino workers to discuss their concerns.

Abalos said he recently spoke with Secretary Jerry Acuzar of the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) to propose setting aside a certain percentage of government housing program exclusively for OFWs, ensuring they have access to affordable and secure homes.
“I proposed to the good secretary, ‘Can we carve out a portion of every housing project for OFWs? Give them a chance to pay in instalment’s and own a home.’ That’s what they should get,” Abalos said.
“You are the heroes of our country. Kayo yung nagreremit ng pera. But when you go back home, may bahay ba kayo na nahulugan?” Abalos told a gathering of Filipino workers in Singapore.
The Philippine Embassy estimates that around 200,000 Filipinos live and work in Singapore, contributing not only to the city-state’s economy but also sending back approximately $2.36 billion in remittances to the Philippines in 2023 alone. Yet, many struggle to secure affordable housing upon their return, according to Abalos.
He also underscored the need for the Philippine Embassy in Singapore to work closely with the Filipino community to ensure the program reaches those who need it most.
“We need to coordinate this with your community and the embassy. Whatever housing projects exist in the Philippines should not be limited to those living there—OFWs should be included,” he stressed.
“I want to listen. I want to hear from you,” he said to OFWs in Singapore.
Beyond housing, Abalos outlined his legislative priorities if elected senator, including scrapping the value-added tax (VAT) on electricity to lower power costs.
Under his leadership as Mandaluyong City mayor, the city was twice named the most business-friendly city and won national awards for child welfare and nutrition.
He championed Project TEACH, a UN-recognized program for children with disabilities, and Garden of Life Park, a modern public cemetery which won the Gawad Galing Pook Award.
Meanwhile, Abalos reminds OFWs to exercise their right to vote, make their voices heard and choose leaders who will protect their welfare, uphold their rights, and work toward a better Philippines.
