Driver of mayoral bet in Abra gunned down
BAGUIO CITY — A driver for a mayoral candidate in Tineg town under the local political party Asenso was shot and killed inside a house in Barangay Zone 3, Bangued town in Abra on Tuesday evening, authorities reported.
Juanito Gammong, 58, of Barangay Dangdangla, Bangued, had been temporarily staying in Barangay Zone 3 at the time of the attack.
The police said Gammong entered the house around 7 p.m. to rest when an unidentified assailant followed him inside and shot him three times before fleeing on foot.
Responding officers rushed Gammong to Abra Provincial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
He suffered gunshot wounds in different parts of his body.
In a social media post, suspended Vice Governor Joy Bernos—who is seeking re-election under the Asenso party—stated that Gammong was a driver for Lenin Benwaren, a fellow party member and mayoral candidate in Tineg.
Crime scene investigators recovered two spent shell casings and a deformed bullet, all from a .45 caliber firearm.
A manhunt is underway, with police setting up checkpoints and conducting dragnet operations to track down the suspect. INQ
