MANILA, Philippines — Candidate for Pasig City lone district representative Ian Sia apologized for his remarks toward single mothers which earned the ire of social media users, women’s group, a cabinet official, and even the Commission on Elections (Comelec).
Sia, a lawyer, jokingly remarked offering himself to single mothers, especially “menstruating” ones.
“I’m sorry for my words. I went too far. I made a wrong choice of joke, not suitable for a political caucus,” said Sia in Filipino in a press conference Friday.
“I hope for my critics, I hope you find it in your hearts to forgive a person who has committed a mistake. I hope you will give me another chance,” he added.
Sia noted that one of his siblings and his grandmother were solo parents.
“I know the things that single mothers go through. It’s not a joking matter. I have a clean intention to help that sector,” Sia added.
The task force said this could be a possible violation of Comelec Resolution No. 11116.
The resolution states that no discrimination shall be acted against marginalized groups like women, along with people that are part of the LGBTQIA+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and asexual) community, indigenous peoples, persons living with HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) and persons with disability.
