MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Monday asked Misamis Oriental gubernatorial reelectionist Peter Unabia to explain his unsavory remarks on women and Moro people.

Comelec Chairman George Erwin Garcia shared the poll body’s anti-discrimination panel’s show cause order against Unabia, which stated: “In view of the foregoing, you are hereby ordered to SHOW CAUSE in writing within a non-extendible period of three days from the receipt thereof and to explain why a complaint for election offense and/or petition for disqualification should not be filed against you.”

Unabia came under fire for telling a crowd that their localities risked being dominated by Maranaos if his slate and allies were defeated.

He also earned the ire of women’s groups for his remarks about “ugly” nurses.

This is not the first time the Comelec has issued a show cause order over a political aspirant’s remarks.

On April 3, Pasig City lone district representative aspirant Ian Sia was also a subject of a show cause order from the Comelec for offering himself to single mothers, especially “menstruating” ones.
