MANILA, Philippines — A day before the May 12 national and local elections, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. urged Filipinos to vote and choose candidates with “integrity, compassion, and genuine capacity to serve.”

Marcos made this call in a one-minute video message posted on his social media account on Sunday.

“Fellow countrymen, in this election, let us exercise our rights and fulfill our responsibilities as Filipino citizens. This is an opportunity for each of us to have our voices heard and to express our dreams that are important to all of you and the nation,” he said in Filipino.

Marcos also pointed out that diversity of political beliefs among voters must not lead to “division, violence, or fear.”

“We may have different beliefs, but that is the essence of democracy. Differences of opinion should not lead to chaos or intimidation. We fight for our future at the ballot box. Not in the streets. Not with violence,” he said in Filipino.

“So let’s vote. Choose the honest, caring, and capable of serving. And to the candidates, let’s respect the process. Let’s end the election with dignity and peace.”

“Let us work together to maintain a fair, peaceful, and just election. Thank you very much. Long live the Filipino people. Long live our democracy,” he added.
