Senator-elect Bong Go vows to expand tertiary education law

MANILA, Philippines — Senator-elect Bong Go on Saturday said that investing in tertiary education is important to provide more academic opportunities to college students.

Go vowed to push for more “pro-poor” programs on health, education, and sports in his second term as a senator.

Go said that with the help of fellow legislators, they will continue to help future generations.

“We need to invest more in education, like expanding further the law promoting the Universal Access to Tertiary Education signed by former President Duterte so the students will be able to choose more programs and avail free education,” Go said in his speech after being proclaimed as senator.

The Republic Act No. 10931, or the free college education law, became a law on August 3, 2017. Similar bills were previously filed in Congress from 2016 to 2017.

Go also emphasized the importance of fostering sports development in the country “so that aspiring young athletes can be given the opportunity to improve their skills and hopefully eventually produce more Olympic medalists.”

In his speech, Go thanked Duterte for his support of his candidacy. He recalled how Duterte became his “mentor and inspiration” for over 20 years.

The frontrunner in the Senate race garnered a total of 27,121,073 votes. Go is one of the “DuterTEN” candidates, or the senatorial bets endorsed by Duterte. /jpv
