MANILA, Philippines — Over 64 metric tons of campaign materials were collected in Metro Manila alone, Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairman George Erwin Garcia said on Tuesday.

“In the entire Metro Manila, the MMDA said, 64.5 metric tons of campaign materials were collected,” Garcia said during the inspection of disposed election campaign materials at Payatas Disposal Facility in Quezon City.

“Meaning, that is not even for the entirety,” he added. “How many metric tons would that be for the whole Philippines?”

Garcia noted that many of the campaign materials did not comply with the biodegradable requirement of the Comelec.

The Comelec ordered candidates to dismantle their campaign materials five days after the May 12 elections.

“Now, the five day [deadline] already lapsed, did they remove it already?”

If not, Garcia said the Comelec could still file cases against candidates before June 30 or before the assumption of office where the Comelec has jurisdiction, and even a criminal case beyond that date.
