MANILA, Philippines — Senate President Francis Escudero took his oath on Monday as the presiding officer of the impeachment court for Vice President Sara Duterte’s impending impeachment trial.
Sen. Joel Villanueva, who first made the motion, repeatedly clarified that the chamber, however, was “not yet convened as a court.”
The senator-judges are set to take their oaths on Tuesday, June 10, at 4 p.m.
Earlier, Sen. Aquilino Pimentel III moved to have the upper chamber convened as an impeachment court for the trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.
Sen. Risa Hontiveros, who composed the minority in the Senate with Pimentel, earlier announced this during a press conference at the Senate, saying:
“My fellow countrymen, we will not allow the Senate to be the first to defy the Constitution. That is why this afternoon, later in the plenary, we in the Senate minority will take action to begin fulfilling our constitutional duty.”
She seconded Pimentel’s motion, which included the following proposals:
suspension of the Senate’s legislative business
convening of the Senate as an impeachment court “at this very moment”
for the Senate president to immediately take his oath as presiding officer of the impeachment court
for the Senate president to administer the oath of all senators present in the plenary
for the impeachment court to come up with a calendar for the trial
presentation and reading of charges against Duterte by the House of Representatives’ panel of prosecutors on June 10, 2025
for the impeachment court to issue the writ of summons to the impeached officer
