Bong Go files COC to become senator again via 2025 polls

MANILA, Philippines — Sen. Bong Go, a close friend of President Rodrigo Duterte, officially lodged Thursday his bid to become senator again via the 2025 midterm polls.

He filed his certificate of candidacy (COC) before the Commission on Elections at the Manila Hotel’s Tent City.

Go served as an aide to Duterte, who ruled Davao City for a long time, and then assumed the role of Special Assistant to the President after Duterte won as the country’s chief executive in 2016.

Go eventually quit Duterte’s Cabinet and ran for senator in 2019. He won in that senatorial race, placing third for garnering 20.657 million votes.

But even after becoming senator, Go maintained his ties with then-President Duterte, whom he regarded as his “idol” and “mentor.”

Go’s 2025 senatorial bid has been endorsed by the Duterte-led Partido Demokratiko Pilipino, which also backed next year’s reelection attempt of Bato dela Rosa, who likewise won in the 2019 senatorial contest.
