Comelec exec in Lanao del Norte dead in apparent poll-related violence

MANILA, Philippines — An election officer in Lanao del Norte was “brutally killed” on Monday in apparent poll-related violence, according to the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

In a statement, the Comelec “condemns in the strongest terms the brutal killing” of the acting election officer identified as Mark Orlando Q. Vallecer II who was slain in Salvador town.

Vallecer’s killing, the poll body said, is “not only a crime against a public servant but an assault on democracy itself”.

The Comelec also said: “We mourn the loss of a colleague who served with courage and integrity, and we extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. The Commission remains steadfast in its mission to uphold free, fair, and peaceful elections. Violence will not deter us, and those who seek to harm democracy will face the full force of justice.”

While details are still thin about this, Comelec said measures are being undertaken to expedite the investigation.

Fatal election-related violence were reported in the Mindanao in previous months.

In October, a village watchman was killed and six others were injured during a violent commotion near the municipal hall of Shariff Aguak, Maguindanao del Sur as rival political supporters exchanged gunfire.

“As we approach the upcoming elections, we call on candidates, supporters, and the public to reject violence and intimidation. True leadership is earned through respect, trust, and principled competition, not fear and coercion,” Comelec said.
