Comelec warns more fake news as polls near

MANILA, Philippines — As Election Day approaches, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) said it is expecting a deluge of fake news to discredit the poll body and undermine the credibility of the midterm polls.

The latest fake news claims that registered voters need to present their national IDs to vote.

“There are really unscrupulous people and groups whose goal is to erode the credibility of our elections. They are trying to sow doubts in the minds of the Filipino people,” Comelec Chair George Garcia said in an interview with dzBB on Sunday.

Garcia clarified that registered voters need not present any ID as long as their names appear on the Election Day Computerized Voters’ List or their status is considered active.

But he still advised voters to bring any government-issued ID should the need arise.

As of April last year, 50 million national ID cards have been delivered—only 44 percent of the 114 million population.
