MANILA, Philippines — Another political drama unfolded in Makati City on Wednesday as Sen. Nancy Binay accused her brother-in-law and rival in the mayoral bid of causing the rift among her siblings.
Binay is running against Makati 2nd district Rep. Luis Campos, the husband of her sister, outgoing Mayor Abby Binay, who is now gunning for the Senate in the upcoming elections.
Nancy spoke about her brother-in-law during a United Nationalists Alliance (UNA)’s Facebook live program called “Bonding Muna.”
“As for my opponent for mayor of Makati, we tried — we really tried — to accept you as our brother-in-law,” the senator said in Filipino.
“But I don’t understand why you keep trying to drive a wedge between us and our sister Abby. You’re deliberately trying to ruin the bond we have as siblings,” she lamented.
Nancy also accused her rival of trying to destroy the “Serbisyong Binay” legacy of her father, former Makati mayor Jejomar Binay.
“You know that politics is not the reason behind the conflict among us siblings — you are,” she then said.
According to the senator, she was just responding to the issues being raised against her and UNA — one of them was her sister’s supposed pronouncement that she had already surpassed the services of their parents.
Aside from their father, their mom, Elenita, and their youngest sibling, Junjun, also became mayor of the city.
Nancy stressed none of them could surpass what their parents have done for the city.
She also mentioned hearing Abby supposedly saying in her speeches that she considers her own family her enemy.
“I understand if that’s how she feels toward us, her siblings. But I ask her, please don’t treat our parents as enemies. They’re no longer young, so don’t destroy your relationship with them,” Nancy added.
In the end, the senator reiterated that she does not consider her sister an enemy and that they would remain sisters no matter what.

“And I hope that at some point, when you’re no longer bitter, we can reconcile,” said the senator, whose term ends on June 30.
