Ramos cracks down on looters

NEW AFP Chief of Staff Gen. Fidel V. Ramos, in his first official act under the government of President Aquino, yesterday directed all AFP and Integrated National Police commanders to issue instructions that would ensure a peaceful transition to the new government.

In his directive, type-written in the old official Defense Ministry letterhead in which he wrote by hand the word “new” to indicate a new AFP General Headquarters. Ramos directed the field commanders to issue the instructions immediately to prevent the following:

– looting, particularly against government buildings, business establishments and or residences of cronies and former government officials and even more importantly those of ordinary citizens.

– vandalism specially willful destruction or burning of the above

– traffic disturbances places far from areas of military or police operations.

– lynching, public humiliation, or the like of any persons for whatever reason.

– any crimes against public order.

– any illegal orders emanating from ex-president Marcos and/or other unauthorized sources specially those orders that endanger the lives and safety of fellow Filipinos. Below is a photocopy of Ramos first directive.
